Polls: Akpabio’s kinsmen accuse him of unleashing violence on them

TRACKING>>At least 500 stakeholders including political leaders and party leaders from Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, led by Prince Ukpong Akpabio (cousin to Senator Godswill Akpabio) have accused the former Senate Minority Leader and governor of the state of unleashing violence and terror on them during the last governorship and House of Assembly election in the state.

They made their position known yesterday during a press conference at the NUJ Secretariat in Uyo, the state capital, where in a communique signed by the stakeholders and leaders said the Essien Udim people condemned in strong terms a series of electoral offenses and irregularities allegedly masterminded and perpetrated by Senator Godswill Akpabio and his cohorts in which almost all the election process in the area was marred by militarisation, rigging and assault on INEC electoral officers.”

The communique read by Imo-Owo Okpokpo further stated: “The atrocities committed by Senator Godswill Akpabio include carting away of electoral materials and whisking away INEC ad-hoc staff in all the units that made up the 11 wards in the area with the help of military personnel with armored vehicles to the residence of one his relations.”

The people further alleged that the police men, who were shooting indiscriminately, also detained and maimed some PDP supporters in the process.

They further explained: “Senator Godswill Akpabio with his cohorts apart from assaulting INEC staff also beat some PDP supporters to unconsciousness,” even as the leaders of Essien Udim noted that in units where election was duly conducted, PDP won overwhelmingly and they have their result sheets intact.
