TRACKING>>Ahead of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nation (AFCON) in Egypt, the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Solomon Dalung has thrown his weight behind Nigeria’s Super Eagles to lift the continental title for the fourth time.
The three time African champions Nigeria are drawn in Group B where they will battle the Syli Nationale of Guinea, Intamba Mu Rugamba of Burundi and Madagascar in the group phase of the 2019 AFCON.
Dalung, who spoke to newsmen over the weekend, said the Gernot Rohr-led squad stands a good chance of winning the biannual showpiece in Egypt.
“With the groupings of 2019 AFCON by CAF, the Super Eagles have the chances of clinching the African Nations Cup title for the fourth time in Egypt,” he said.
He urged the team to replicate their last outing in South Africa, where they emerged as champions in 2013.
“In all the matches during the qualifying series, the Super Eagles team improved as the game progresses. So, being in a group termed as ‘easy’ is good and opportunity for Eagles not only to qualify for the second round but to win the title for the fourth time. I don’t want them to rest on their oars, but to repeat exactly what they did in South Africa six years ago by winning the trophy for Nigeria.”
He reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to supporting the team as they seek to do the nation proud at the continental showpiece.
The 32nd edition of the Africa Cup of Nations is scheduled to run from June 21st to July 19 in Egypt.
