The Executive Chairman of Eleme LGA in Rivers state, Hon. Obarilomate Ollor, has ordered the immediate closure of an illegal Animal Skin processing factory in Aleto Eleme over usage of hazardous chemicals in processing their meat popularly called canda in the local parlance.

Chief Obarilomate ,who took operators of the factory by surprise in an unscheduled visit expressed disgust over the usage of formaldehyde popularly known as formalin, an industrial disinfectant used in mortuaries to preserve human corpse in processing the animal skin for human consumption and frowned at the sanitary condition of the factory.

He condemned the whole process and ordered the immediate arrest of owners of the place; workers and all those involved insisting that it is hazardous to human health, consumption and human existence.

“We are disappointed with this. This is what is happening in Eleme LGA and I understand that some people have been collecting money from them because for them to be carrying out business in the centre of the town like this means that some community leaders are aware of this and are collecting money without asking them if they have proper authorisation because something like this, NAFDAC and all the regulatory agencies should be aware.
