A non-political organization under the aegis of Worried Nigeria Citizens, WNC, on Wednesday, called on President Muhammadu Buhari to declare a state of emergency in Ebonyi State over the continued harassment of opposition parties.

The group made this known in a statement signed by its National President, Moses Idika and made available to newsmen in Abakaliki, capital of Ebonyi State.

Idike, however, called for intervention of President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure immediate release of the Labour Party, LP, senatorial candidate for Ebonyi South District, Okorie, from the Abakaliki correctional centre, to enable him go about his electioneering campaigns.

According to him: “We, therefore, demand that security agencies in Ebonyi State should ensure that nothing happens to Linus Abba Okorie. And, we as a matter of urgency urge President Muhammadu Buhari to call Governor David Umahi to order in order to forestall the breakdown of law and order in Ebonyi State.

The group tasked the governor to allow politicians, especially those in the opposition party to go about their electioneering activities ahead of the 2023 general elections within the laws of the land, without intimidation, harassment and molestation.

“As an effective deterrent, in line with the constitutional powers of Mr. President as enshrined in Section 305, (1),(2) of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), President Muhammadu Buhari should without delay declare a state of emergency in Ebonyi State as Governor David Umahi has sufficiently proven his capability and determination to sink democracy and rule of law in Nigeria,” he stressed.
