UK needs general election, not ‘handpicked’ Rishi Sunak – MP, Taiwo Owatemi
By Adeleye Kunle
A member of the United Kingdom parliament, Taiwo Owatemi has expressed outrage over the emergence of Rishi Sunak as Prime Minister.
The Conservative Party leader took charge as Britain’s first Indian-origin PM this week, a position he lost to his predecessor, Liz Truss in August.
Owatemi, MP for Coventry North West, said Sunak should not be in office because he was selected by a few persons.
In separate Twitter posts, the 30-year-old Labour Party member called for the immediate conduct of a general election.
“Rishi Sunak has been hand-picked by a small group of out-of-touch Conservative MPs, with the British people having had no say at all.
“He has no mandate to lead our country at this crucial time. We need a General Election, now.
“Number of eligible voters in the UK = 46.5 million. People who chose Rishi Sunak to be Prime Minister = 357 Conservative MPs”, she wrote.
The former Shadow Minister for Women and Equalities stated that the economic crisis facing the UK did not happen overnight.
Owatemi said there had been 12 years of low growth, falling living standards and widening inequality under the Conservatives.
“Rishi Sunak was the Chancellor for over two of those years. He’s part of the problem, not the solution”, the lawmaker declared
