Larry, a source who spoke to reporters Newspaper, said gunshots woke many residents up, followed by loud cries from people inside the mosque.
“My name is Larry, and I work as a commercial vehicle driver in Ughelli.” I live very close to the central mosque, so we heard a shooting at the mosque this morning around 6.45 a.m.
“Many people in my compound were terrified because of fear, and we remained inside, only peeping through our windows.”
“We heard loud cries from some worshippers inside the mosque as the shooting continued,” Larry said.
According to him, residents rushed to the mosque in large numbers to see what happened after the gunmen left.
He stated that residents assisted in the evacuation of injured worshippers and that those who survived the attack suffered serious injuries.
Larry went on to say that the gunmen kidnapped at least three worshippers.
DSP Bright Edafe, the Delta State police spokesperson, confirmed the attack and stated that only 11 worshippers were injured.
He, however, was unable to confirm the kidnapping of three worshippers.
“I just called the DPO in Ughelli, and he confirmed that 11 people were injured in the mosque attack.”
“However, the police have launched an investigation into the incident, and we will keep you updated as we work to identify the perpetrators.”
“For now, no arrest has been made but I can assure you that we will get those involved,” Edafe said.
