The Abia State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has been thrown into crisis following the suspension of its state chairman, Don Obinna, by the State Working Committee (SWC) on Friday. The
suspension, announced during a harmonisation and unification meeting in Aba, was prompted by allegations of abuse of office and high-handedness leveled against Obinna in a petition by the party’s Deputy Social/Welfare Secretary, C. C. John.
The SWC swiftly appointed the state vice chairman, Kanu Okorofor, as acting chairman and established a three-man committee, led by Kalu Kalu, to investigate the allegations. Speaking after the meeting, Okorofor accused Obinna of mismanaging party affairs, including the alleged sale of two buses, a Sienna car, and other ADC property. “Obinna ran the party like a personal business. After the 2023 elections, he drove everyone away from the party. He holds meetings without inviting SWC members and dismisses them after speaking,” Okorofor claimed.
Okorofor described the suspension as a necessary step to reposition the ADC for the 2027 governorship election, stating, “Obinna’s suspension came at the right time because we need a chairman who will work for the interest of the party so we can meet our target.”
When contacted by newsmen, Obinna, who was in a meeting, promised to respond later but had not provided a statement as of the time of this report.
