The nomination of Adebayo Lawal as the state’s new Deputy Governor has been approved by the Oyo State House of Assembly.
This comes after lawmakers impeached Engineer Rauf Olaniyan on Monday.
As previously reported by Tracknews , lawmakers impeached Olaniyan during the house plenary on Monday around 11.30 a.m., noting that the impeachment takes immediate effect.
This follows the reading and adoption of the recommendations of a report by a seven-man panel appointed by the State Chief Judge, Munta Abimbola, to investigate allegations against the deputy governor.
The report was read aloud on the House floor by Majority Leader Sanjo Adedoyin, and Olaniyan was found guilty on all charges.
Lawal’s nomination as Olaniyan’s replacement has now been approved by the state legislature in a swift move.
It is understood that the State Governor, Seyi Makinde, had previously forwarded Lawal’s name to the lawmakers for consideration and approval.
Reading the Governor’s letter of request, Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin stated that Makinde’s request is in response to a letter sent to him on July 18 informing him of Olaniyan’s removal from office.
Following some debate, the Speaker put the nomination to a voice vote, and Lawal was confirmed as the new Deputy Governor.
Lawal was also recently announced as Makinde’s running mate for the 2023 election, according to Track News.
Following the appointment of Lawal as the new Deputy Governor of Oyo State, the Assembly went on a brief recess.
The House has been adjourned until Thursday, July 21, 2022.
