Angry former PDP candidates in Cross River join the Labour Party

Ibekimi Oriamaja Reports

Profiting from the turmoil that is shaking the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State is the Labour Party (LP).

Five new members running for various positions have defected from the main opposition party to the LP, which is now seen as the third force in the general elections of next year.

This was made clear at a recent town hall meeting held in Calabar, the capital of the Cross River State, for participants and backers of Peter Obi, the candidate for president. The purpose of the event was to educate party members and supporters about the party’s presidential flag bearer’s aspirations.

Danial Asuquo, a member of the House of Representatives who was elected on the PDP platform, has emerged as the LP candidate for the Cross River South senatorial constituency. Asuquo, who is the National Assembly representative for the Akamkpa Biase Federal Constituency, finished third in the most recent PDP governorship primaries.

Another disgruntled former PDP leader, Dominic Aqua-Edem, just joined the LP. Aqua-Edem, who was unsuccessful in getting the PDP nomination for the Akpabuyo, Bakassi, and Calabar South Federal Constituency seat, is now the leading candidate for the LP in that same constituency.

Asuquo claimed that the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the PDP, the two largest political parties in the nation, have been too tolerant to Nigerians. He said that the current problems plaguing the nation were the fault of the two parties. In Nigeria, a political revolution will be led by the Labour Party, he declared.

He continued, “We are prepared to lead that movement in Cross River State to win all elections. In LP, we don’t use cash to buy people’s good conscience. Father, mother, and kids make up our group. We reach out to the populace in an effort to influence their consciences. From one street to the next, ward to ward, we have begun with that.

Asuquo, who has served in the National Assembly for more than two terms, claimed that the Federal Constituency of Biase and Akamkpa has a strong structure and visible constituency initiatives that will benefit him in winning the election the next year.
