– The religious group describes corruption as a cancer that has eaten deep into the fabric of the Nigerian state

– CAN commends the Buhari administration for recovering some looted funds through the implementation of the treasury single account (TSA) and the bank verification number (BVN)

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has told President Muhammadu Buhari that corrupt politicians now see the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a safe haven.

The religious body made the statement on Friday, November 16, during a meeting it had with Buhari at the presidential villa in Abuja, The Cable reports.

CAN, led by Samson Ayodele, its president, urged Buhari to address allegations that his war on corruption is only targeted at people that are not members of the APC, by making his fight against corruption total and non-discriminatory.

The religious group described corruption as a cancer that has eaten deep into the fabric of the Nigerian state.

It however commended the Buhari administration for recovering of some looted funds through the implementation of the treasury single account (TSA) and the bank verification number (BVN).

“Like we categorically noted here during our last visit, the wish of the people is for the war against corruption to be total and without discrimination. Not a few believe that the ruling party is becoming a safe haven to some corrupt politicians in their bid to escape the trap of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission,” CAN said.

“CAN commends your boldness and courage in implementing the BVN and the treasury single account (TSA) system. There is no doubt that the two policies have greatly helped in sanitising the system.”

The group also asked the president to ensure a free and fair electoral process in the 2019 election. It advised Buhari to direct the police and other security agencies to be non-partisan during the elections.

“A presidential order to the police and other security agencies to be non-partisan, neutral and apolitical in the coming general elections, with a view to securing international respect and honour for our country in the comity of nations,” it said.

“We believe that the survival and peace of Nigeria are greater than the ambition of any politician.

“We again request that your administration conducts free and fair election that will add to the accolades the country received from the conduct of the 2015 elections that brought you to power.”

Meanwhile, as the nation moves into election mode with the commencement of election campaigns next week, President Muhammadu Buhari has again reassured of a free, fair and credible elections in the country.

The president stated this when he met with a delegation of Imams and senior Islamic scholars in Abuja on Friday, November 16.

He disclosed that a number of measures put in place had seen the gradual improvement of elections, as in Edo, Anambra, Ekiti and Osun States.

He said these were different from what he described as “dismal and unacceptable levels witnessed in Rivers and Kogi States.”
