Joe Aribo has expressed his delight at Calvin Bassey’s decision to join Ajax.
The pair were Rangers teammates and have developed a close friendship over the last few seasons.
They also play together for Nigeria at the international level.
Following his €27 million switch, Bassey signed a five-year contract with Ajax.
Aribo also left Ibrox this summer, with Southampton signing the talented attacking midfielder in a deal worth up to £10 million.
And the 25-year-old believes Bassey deserves to be promoted.
“I speak to him a lot,” he told talkSPORT. He’s overjoyed with the change.
“It’s well-deserved because he had an outstanding campaign last year.” He’s very enthusiastic.”
Saints host Manchester United and Southampton in the first month of the new season.
Aribo was asked if that was a scary prospect or something he was looking forward to.
“I’m excited,” he said. I’m not a nervous player any longer. I used to be, but now I just enjoy the moment and the occasion. I can’t wait to get started.
“I’m a No.10 or an eight.” I just want to get involved in the action, be on the ball, and help us advance up the field.
“This season, we want to push and fight.” We want to finish in the top half of the table and compete for a place in Europe. That is the goal.
“We’ll give it our all and do everything we can as a team because we’re on a good path here, and I’m excited for what’s to come.”
