Army Chief Orders Investigation into Viral Video of Soldiers Complaining About Poor Feeding

The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has ordered an immediate investigation into a viral video showing Nigerian soldiers expressing deep frustration over inadequate feeding while on deployment. The video, which surfaced online earlier this week, has sparked public concern and raised serious questions about the welfare of troops serving in operational theaters.

In the footage, the soldiers are seen voicing their grievances about poor treatment, specifically citing the substandard and insufficient food they are allegedly being provided by their operational commanders. The visibly upset troops complained that despite being at the frontlines of critical national security operations, they are being denied basic necessities required to maintain morale and carry out their duties effectively.

The soldiers in the video did not identify their location, but military sources suggest they may be stationed in one of the country’s troubled regions where counter-insurgency and anti-banditry operations are ongoing. Their complaints included allegations that food rations were either diverted or reduced to unacceptable levels, leaving them demoralized and physically strained.

Reacting swiftly to the public outrage generated by the video, Lieutenant General Oluyede directed that a comprehensive inquiry be launched to determine the circumstances that led to the incident. According to senior military officials, the Army Headquarters is treating the matter with urgency, describing it as a critical issue of troop welfare and operational discipline.

Military spokespersons have not yet provided details on the composition or timeline of the investigative panel, but sources confirm that commanders in affected units may be summoned to account for the reported lapses. The investigation will focus on verifying the authenticity of the video, identifying the units involved, and assessing whether standard procedures for troop welfare have been violated.

General Oluyede is said to be particularly concerned about the morale and effectiveness of frontline troops, emphasizing that operational success depends heavily on the physical and psychological well-being of soldiers. He reportedly issued a directive to all commanding officers reminding them of their duty to ensure the full welfare entitlements of their personnel are provided without compromise.

The Nigerian Army has faced recurring criticism over the years regarding the conditions faced by troops deployed in conflict zones. While authorities have repeatedly assured the public of improved logistics and support systems, periodic complaints from soldiers suggest that implementation gaps still exist at various levels of command.

Defence analysts say that incidents like this viral video highlight the need for greater transparency and accountability in military logistics management. They argue that while discipline within the armed forces must be upheld, legitimate grievances, especially those related to welfare, must be addressed to prevent operational fatigue, low morale, and potential security risks.

The Army has not confirmed whether any of the soldiers involved in the video will face disciplinary action. However, officials note that the immediate focus is to determine the facts and ensure that such incidents do not recur. Public reaction to the video has largely been sympathetic, with many Nigerians expressing concern over the conditions under which security forces operate.

Human rights and civil society groups have also weighed in, urging the military high command to treat the matter as a systemic issue rather than isolate it as a one-time incident. Some organizations have called for independent oversight mechanisms to monitor how troops are treated in the field.

The ongoing investigation is expected to cover a range of issues, including supply chain management, accountability of field commanders, and the effectiveness of the Army’s internal monitoring systems. The Nigerian Army has promised to make the findings public once the investigation is concluded.

As the country continues to grapple with multiple security challenges across different regions, the well-being of soldiers remains a crucial element in sustaining long-term stability. Lieutenant General Oluyede’s response to the video is being seen as a test of the military’s commitment to reforming its internal structures and upholding the welfare of its personnel on the frontlines.
