The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, on Tuesday threatened to embark on strike at the end of the three-week ultimatum given to the Federal Government.

According to ASUU, it has not heard from President Muhammadu Buhari-led government since they both met last Thursday.

Recall that the union had earlier given the FG an ultimatum over it failure to fulfil some of the agreements it made with the union in 2020.

The federal government had promised to pay the N30billion revitalisation fund to universities while also agreeing to release N22.1billion earned allowances to university workers.

The President of ASUU, Emmanuel Osodeke, had also condemned the pressure placed on members of the union by the government in respect to the Integrated Personnel Payment Information System.

Meanwhile, the ultimatum saw the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila invite the president of the union, the Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed; and Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, among others.

The federal government at the end of the meeting held last week promised to pay ASUU this week.

Osodeke while speaking on Tuesday disclosed that the Federal government was yet to make any move.

He said the federal government had not commenced payment and had not reached out after the meeting.

Osodeke said, “Since that meeting, we have not heard from the Federal Government. But our ultimatum still stands. We gave the government three weeks and one week has passed; they are left with two weeks.”
