It was a day of joy in Bayelsa State Thursday as the first airplane marked 5N-BUV, touched down at the newly-built Bayelsa International airport in Amassoma, Southern Ijaw, the heartland of the Ijaw nation.

The first aircraft to land in Bayelsa International Airport is a boeing 737 operated by Air Peace Airline. It touched down on the 3.5 kilometer runway which is the longest in Nigeria. The first aircraft was operated by Capt. Crosby Otobo and his crew. They left the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos for the airport. The flight was welcomed by a record of overjoyed indigenes and residents of Bayelsa, including the state Governor, Henry Seriake Dickson and top government officials.

Yenagoa Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has restated his administration’s commitment to ensure commercial flight operations begin at the state-owned airport in no distant time.

Senator Diri gave the assurance when the Air Officer Commanding Mobility Command of the Nigerian Air Force, Yenagoa, Air Vice Marshal Ibukun Omotayo, and his team visited him in Yenagoa.

In a press release by his Acting Chief Press Secretary, Mr Daniel Alabrah, the governor stressed the importance of security to his administration coupled with the fact that the state was deltaic and riverine.

He promised to work with the command to ensure its operations fully commenced in the state.

Diri said, “You talked about a regimental training base at Toru-Orua that is yet to take off. Once I get the details, I assure you that we will expedite action for that base to take off.
