Bayelsa’s Matthew John Triumphs at FISU Trials; Set to Represent Nigeria in Germany

The Bayelsa State Table Tennis Association (BYSTTA) is elated to announce that Matthew John, one of its prodigious talents and a scholarship recipient at Benson Idahosa University (BIU), has clinched the Men’s Singles Championship at the 2025 FISU Trials. This remarkable achievement secures his spot to represent Nigeria at the upcoming Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games in Germany.
The FISU Trials, held at the University of Jos (UNIJOS) from April 4th to 6th, 2025, witnessed intense competition among the nation’s top university athletes vying for a place on the international stage. Matthew’s exceptional performance not only highlights his dedication and skill but also underscores the quality of talent nurtured within Bayelsa State.
In a heartfelt message to his mentor and father figure, Ama-ebi Ebikpolade, Matthew expressed his gratitude: “Good afternoon Dad. I’m thrilled to share that I won the Men’s Singles Champion of 2025 FISU TRIAL! I’m forever grateful for your unwavering support and guidance. Matthew will be joined by fellow compatriot Samuel Boboye as they both prepare to showcase Nigerian excellence on the global stage in Germany.
