The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA has accused President Muhammadu Buhari of “systematically and methodically destroying” constitutional democracy in Nigeria.
HIRIWA made the accusations against the President on Saturday in a statement by its National Coordinator Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko and the National Media Affairs Director Miss Zainab Yusuf.
The statement alleged that the Buhari led administration was gradually “replacing democracy with dictatorship”.
Reacting to the president’s democracy speech on Saturday, HURIWA further alleged that the current administration has “established corruption, permissive economic crimes amongst top federal government officials connected to the first family either by tribe, religion, marriage or party affinities, impunity and lawlessness at the highest levels”.
It lamented that the president has “allowed armed Fulani militia to continue to destabilize the Northwest zone of the country to such an extent that armed members of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association now rely on the express body language and morale-boosting statements from the Presidency to commit atrocities and mass killings in Benue State”.
The statement reads, “We are convinced that the current administration has increasingly failed to stop the extrajudicial killings of the Youngsters in Igbo LAND under the guise that they are members of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) already banned by President Muhammadu Buhari through an irregular way by obtaining a kangaroo injunction declaring IPOB as a terrorist organisation.”
“It is evidently clear and factually unambiguous that this same Muhammadu Buhari-led administration through the Senior Special Assistant on Media Mr Garba Shehu has consistently defended armed Fulani herdsmen who ought to be declared a terrorist organisation long ago but for the fact that President Muhammadu Buhari personally supports their activities”.
“It will amount to intolerable insanity for any Nigerian to celebrate the Democracy Day given that President Muhammadu Buhari has on his own pocketed both the judiciary and the Legislature which are essential institutions to enforce the Constitutional checks and balances that are of imperative demand in any constitutional democracy.”
“So where is the Constitutional democracy in Nigeria when both the Chief Justice of Nigeria Tanko Muhammad and the Head of the Legislature Ahmed Lawan are in the pockets of the Head of the executive arm of government-President Muhammadu Buhari?”
“Nigerians must wake up from slumber and ensure that the country does not slide into a state of war which is exactly where it is now headed due to the rudderless leadership and the compromised heads of the judiciary and legislature thereby occasioning the emerging dictatorship of the few unelected politicians and political Jobbers who surround President Muhammadu Buhari in the name if being members of his kitchen cabinet.
“We restate our fear that it will take Nigeria time to recover from the demolitions of all democratic institutions by the current administration and in terms of the monumental debts that President Muhammadu Buhari has pushed the country into, it may take us a century to repair this damage to the National economy.
“It is regrettable that the absentee President Muhammadu Buhari has allowed a regime of rogue officials to decimate and degrade our Commonwealth. The stealing of public fund going on amongst the Cabinet ministers of President Muhammadu Buhari is epic and devastating,”.HURIWA alleged.
