President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed deep sadness over the death of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom.

Nigeria’s President expressed his condolences to the Royal Family in a statement issued late Thursday evening.

My family and I, and the more than 200 million Nigerians, have learned with immense sadness of the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, and the end of her unique and wonderful 70-year reign. She was the only British Sovereign known to 90 percent of our population.

“My family and I, and the more than 200 million Nigerians have learned with immense sadness of the passing of the Queen and the end of her unique and wonderful 70 year reign. Her late Majesty was the only British Sovereign known to 90 percent of our population.

“Our thoughts and sincere condolences are with the Royal Family and the people of the United Kingdom and the entire Commonwealth as we join the entire world in mourning her loss.

“The story of modern Nigeria will never be complete without a chapter on Queen Elizabeth ll, a towering global personality and an outstanding leader. She dedicated her life to making her nation, the Commonwealth and the entire world a better place,” the president stated.

He also welcomed His Majesty’s accession to the throne in the traditional manner, and prayed that King Charles the Third’s reign will witness the continuation of our two countries’ robust and sisterly relations.

President Buhari joins the rest of the world to mourn Britain’s longest serving monarch who was until her death a good and reliable Queen.

Final official duty

Queen Elizabeth made her final public appearance on Tuesday, just two days before her death.

The monarch, who died “peacefully” at the age of 96 at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, formally appointed on Tuesday a new prime minister. Liz Truss, the new Prime Minister, traveled to Scotland’s Balmoral Castle, where the Queen traditionally spends her summers, for the meeting.

The meeting marked Queen Elizabeth’s last appointment of a new prime minister.

The Queen — who had been experiencing episodic mobility issues before death — was photographed shaking hands with Truss while holding a walking cane and her go-to black handbag.

On Tuesday, outgoing Prime Minister Boris Johnson traveled to Scotland for a formal farewell from the monarch.

UK’s new Prime Minister described the late Queen as “a rock on which modern Britain was built”.
