No Responsible Govt Can Say Oil-Theft Cannot Be Combatted—Femi Falana Speaks
Hear What Femi Falana Said Concerning Crude Oil Theft, Reveals What Happened In 2012 (Video)
Popular Human Rights Lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, has recently come out to share his thoughts concerning the acclaimed crude oil theft ongoing in the country as revealed by the former Niger Delta Militant, Asari Dokubo.
During an interview with Channels TV Politics, Seun Okinbaloye asked the lawyer to explain why it seems difficult for the government of Nigeria to bring the crude oil thieves to book even after confirming that there are truly highly placed people who are involved in stealing the wealth of the nation.
Speaking in response to the question, Femi Falana argued the notion and stated that combating crude oil theft in the country should not be a hard task for a responsible government. He added that he is aware that Nigeria’s crude oil thieves will be exposed in a very short time.
According to him, “Nigeria’s OPEC quarters are supposedly supposed to be producing 1.8 million barrels per day, but they are now barely producing 1.2 million barrels per day; that means about 600,000 barrels are being stolen. This is unacceptable because no responsible government can say oil theft cannot be combatted, and I’m aware that very soon the oil thieves are going to be exposed.
In 2012, the Jonathan administration set up a committee to investigate the fraud that involved the importation of fuel, and at the end of the investigation, that Committee came up with a report that many of our terminals are not metered. I am aware that we have 36 oil terminals across the country, but only 20 of them are metered. The remaining 16 have not been metered, and that is where oil is stolen.”
He, however, called on the Tinubu administration to make sure that crude oil theft is abolished and its thieves are brought to justice.
