Businessman sues the police and his bank for N10 million for unlawful detentions

Olasupo Adebisi, a businessman, has filed a fundamental rights suit against the Inspector-General of Police, Baba Usman, and five others before Justice C.J. Aneke in the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos State.

The Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 9, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, the Iju-Ishaga Police Division, Inspector Ugorji Ernest, Investigating Police Officer, Abia State, and the United Bank for Africa are among the respondents in the FHC/l/CS/778/21 suit.

The applicant is seeking N10 million in restitution for illegal detention.

Keep up with news reports Adebisi, who ran a POS terminal, was arrested on February 1, 2021, and detained for six hours at the Iju-Ishaga Police Division in Lagos State.

Adebisi stated in his application that he was invited on February 1, 2021, after his account was blocked and he complained to his bank, and that he was arrested without being told why.

He claimed he was detained for more than six hours at the Iju-Ishaga Police Station before being transferred to a police detention facility in Benin, Edo State.

According to the victim, he was transferred to the Zone 9 Police Command in Umuahia, Abia State.

“When my solicitor visited my bank’s branch in lju-Ishaga, Lagos,” he said, “the 6th respondent (the bank) refused to deal with my solicitor, insisting on my presence.”

“My business suffered as a result of the restrictions (on my account).” On February 1, 2021, I was forced to visit the 6th respondent’s branch in lju-Ishaga, Lagos, where I was handcuffed like a common criminal and detained for approximately six hours at the lju-Ishaga Police Division.”
