TRACKING___The Edo Government has donated relief items to the Nigerian Correctional Service in the state for inmates in custody.

The Edo Command’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), DSC Aminu Suleman, made this known in a statement in Benin on Tuesday.

He described the donation by the government as an unprecedented demonstration of the commitment to the care of inmates in custodial centres in state.

He said that this was because, it was the first time all seven custodial centres in the state would be benefitting from welfare relief package of the state government.

Suleman said that the items were received at the flag off ceremony of the distribution of food/relief package by the wife of the Edo Governor, Mrs Betsy Obaseki.

He explained that inmates also benefited from the relief items presented to the vulnerable and less privileged members of the society because of the `stay-at-home’ order by government to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.

The spokesman said the Controller of Corrections in the state, Mr Joseph Usendiah, appreciated the state government for the donation as the items would greatly benefit the inmates.

He said that the Deputy Controller of Corrections (Special Duties), Mr Imo Ikahokhuele, received the items on behalf of the controller.

According to him, due to the pandemic, the inmates were not allowed to receive visitors so as to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus to the custodial centres.

Suleman said that items received include, bags of millets, cartons of noodles, cartons of soap, bags of salt, cartons of seasons, bags of rice (10kg), packs of beans and packs of Garri.

He noted that the items had been shared and distributed to the custodial centres in the state for the benefit of the inmates.
