Crisis in Kogi Central: Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan Faces Recall Threat from Stakeholders

Stakeholders from Kogi Central have issued a warning that they may begin the process of recalling Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan from the Senate. The group, which includes political leaders, traditional rulers, and community representatives, expressed dissatisfaction with the senator’s performance and alleged actions since she assumed office.

In a statement released on Thursday, the stakeholders accused Akpoti-Uduaghan of failing to adequately represent the interests of her constituents. They claimed she has been involved in activities that undermine the unity and development of Kogi Central. According to them, her actions have created division and have not aligned with the expectations of the people who elected her.

The group also alleged that the senator has been using her position to promote personal interests rather than focusing on legislative duties that would benefit her constituents. They criticized her for not working collaboratively with other political leaders in the state, which they argue has slowed down development efforts in the region.

Among the grievances listed by the stakeholders is what they describe as a lack of tangible projects and initiatives that directly benefit the people of Kogi Central. They stated that despite being in office for months, Akpoti-Uduaghan has not shown significant commitment to fulfilling her campaign promises. They also accused her of making statements that they believe are detrimental to the image of Kogi State.

The stakeholders further warned that if the senator does not change her approach and begin to address the concerns of her constituents, they will have no choice but to initiate a recall process. Under Nigerian law, a senator can be recalled if a majority of registered voters in the senatorial district sign a petition demanding their removal. This process, however, is rarely successful due to the legal and procedural hurdles involved.

Supporters of Akpoti-Uduaghan have dismissed the recall threat, describing it as politically motivated. They argue that the senator has been a vocal advocate for good governance and transparency, which has put her at odds with certain political interests in the state. They also claim that the allegations against her are baseless and part of an effort to discredit her work.

Akpoti-Uduaghan, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), won her Senate seat after a closely contested election. Her victory was seen as a major political shift in Kogi Central, where she defeated candidates from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Since taking office, she has been outspoken on several national issues, including electoral reforms and governance accountability.

Political analysts believe that the recall threat could be part of a broader power struggle in Kogi politics. The state has witnessed intense political rivalries, especially between the PDP and APC, with both parties seeking to consolidate influence ahead of future elections. Some observers suggest that the move against Akpoti-Uduaghan may be linked to efforts by her opponents to weaken her political standing.

Despite the controversy, the senator has not yet publicly responded to the recall threat. Her supporters insist that she remains committed to delivering on her campaign promises and that attempts to remove her will not succeed. Meanwhile, the Kogi Central stakeholders say they are monitoring her performance closely and will take further action if necessary.

As the situation unfolds, the recall threat against Akpoti-Uduaghan is likely to generate further political debate in Kogi State. Whether the process moves forward or not, it underscores the ongoing tensions and power struggles within the state’s political landscape.
