A 47-year-old native doctor identified as Okonji Chimeze has been arrested by the Delta State Police Command in connection with illegal possession of firearms. The arrest took place on June 14 in Ibusa, a town in the Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State.
The operation was carried out by the Anti-Kidnapping and Cybercrime Squad of the Delta State Police Command. During a search of Chimeze’s residence, officers discovered two pump-action guns and a cutlass concealed in the ceiling of the building. Police sources confirmed that the items were recovered as part of an intelligence-driven operation.
According to the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, the arrest followed credible information received by the command regarding suspicious activities at the suspect’s residence. Acting on the tip-off, the squad moved to the location and conducted a thorough search of the property. The firearms and weapon were found hidden above the ceiling boards, suggesting an attempt to conceal the items from authorities.
Police officials stated that the native doctor is now in custody and is being interrogated as part of an ongoing investigation. Preliminary inquiries are focused on determining how the suspect came into possession of the firearms, what they were intended for, and whether there are any links to criminal activities such as kidnapping, armed robbery, or cultism.
The Delta State Police Command has emphasized that investigations are continuing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the case. Authorities have not yet disclosed whether the suspect is believed to have been acting alone or if he is connected to a wider criminal network.
This development comes as part of broader efforts by the Delta State Police Command to combat violent crime and illegal possession of firearms across the state. In recent months, the command has stepped up surveillance and intelligence operations targeting suspected criminal hideouts and individuals believed to be in unlawful possession of weapons.
The discovery of pump-action rifles, in particular, has raised concerns due to their use in various violent crimes across the region. Law enforcement agencies have repeatedly called on members of the public to report suspicious behavior and individuals in possession of unlicensed weapons.
Residents of Ibusa have reacted with shock to the news of the arrest, with some expressing concern over the presence of such weapons in a residential area. The case has also sparked discussions about the potential misuse of traditional titles or professions, such as native doctors, as a cover for illegal activities.
Police officials have assured the public that they are committed to ensuring the safety and security of all communities in Delta State. They have also reiterated the importance of public cooperation in providing timely and actionable intelligence.
As of the time of reporting, the suspect remains in police custody. Further details are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses, and legal proceedings may follow depending on the outcome of the inquiries. The Delta State Police Command has pledged to keep the public informed of any significant developments in the case.
