Don’t panic over my self-isolation, says Fayemi

Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi yesterday urged calm over his decision to go into self-isolation over the Coronavirus pandemic.

Fayemi, who on Tuesday broke the news on his Twitter handle that he had self-isolated himself following revelations that some top presidential aides and his colleague governors had tested positive to the virus urged Ekiti State citizens not to panic over the development, said that he took the precautionary measures to prevent the spread of the virus.

The governor said the action became necessary having gone in contact with those suspected to be having index cases of COVID-19.The governor, who spoke through his Chief Press Secretary, Yinka Oyebode, said: “No cause for alarm, I just took this step as a normal precautionary measures.

He, therefore, urged the citizens to abide by the directive on social distancing and hand washing to safeguard the state from the spreading virus.

Meanwhile, the state government has announced additional measures for the enforcement of Executive Order on the prevention of COVID-19 in the state. It said that any person who deliberately infects others with Coronavirus would be prosecuted for murder, attempted murder or assault as applicable.

Also, any person who publishes false news about the virus on any medium, including social media, will in addition to being prosecuted under the Criminal Code Law of Ekiti State be prosecuted under the Cybercrime Act.

Similarly, the advisory states that a law officer may with the guidance of a medical practitioner use reasonable force to arrest “a person who has been clinically or by a laboratory confirmed as having COVID -19” who refuses treatment and quarantine.

Such person is to be detained at the authorised state isolation centre.

Meanwhile, the Ekiti State government has ordered provision of free transport services for students travelling outside the state following the closure of schools as part of measures to curb the spread of Coronavirus.

Fayemi, who directed that transportation assistance be provided for students of higher institutions in the state travelling out of the state following the closure of their schools, also directed that the students be provided with hand sanitisers in the course of the journey.
