DSS Reacts To Alleged Shooting of Baker In Enugu

The Department of State Service (DSS) has distanced itself or its operatives from the killing of a female baker, Chinenye Opah, at Ologo Street in the Coal Camp suburb of Enugu State.

It was reported that DSS operatives allegedly stormed the area in two Hilux vehicles last Friday and immediately they alighted from their vehicles, the operatives started shooting sporadically.

But in statement on Monday by its spokesman, Dr. Peter Afunanya, the secret police said its operatives were not involved in the killing of the baker.

The DSS described the report as fake and a completely misleading information, slamming The Punch newspaper for peddling fake news.

He said: “This is not true. It is a completely misleading information. It is very surprising Punch could engage in spread of fake news peddled by idlers.

“The other time Punch reported that DSS staff shot a soldier in Lagos. Till now, it has not been reported to the Service that any of its staff shot anyone in Lagos or elsewhere.

“Punch can do better to verify its stories in line with the ethics of journalism or ask the simple questions as to who, where, when, why, what and how. This is a given in primary or foundational journalism.

“Then there is need for a balance and objectivity which Punch could have gotten by reaching out to the Service.”
