The Edo State Government has announced that the state-owned transport company will officially resume operations on June 27, 2025.
The declaration was made by the Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, who confirmed the development during a recent address.
Governor Okpebholo stated that the resumption of services by the state transport company is part of a broader effort by his administration to improve public transportation and enhance mobility for residents across the state. He noted that preparations for the relaunch are already at an advanced stage, with logistics, vehicle maintenance, and staffing being finalized ahead of the official date.
The Edo State Transport Company had suspended operations due to a combination of operational challenges and administrative restructuring.
The suspension, which lasted several months, impacted daily commuters, particularly those who rely on government-subsidized transport services for travel within and outside the state.
According to the governor, the revived transport company will begin operations with a newly maintained fleet of buses aimed at delivering safe, efficient, and affordable services. He emphasized that the government has invested in repairs and upgrades to ensure that the vehicles meet modern safety and comfort standards.
Governor Okpebholo also assured the public that the relaunch will not only restore public transport services but also create employment opportunities for Edo residents. He said that drivers, administrative staff, and maintenance personnel will be recruited as part of the initiative, contributing to job creation and economic stimulation in the state.
He further highlighted that the state’s Ministry of Transport and relevant agencies have been tasked with ensuring the smooth and timely resumption of services. He directed them to implement systems for route optimization, fare regulation, and passenger safety.
Residents have welcomed the news, expressing hope that the return of the state-owned buses will alleviate the burden of high transportation costs caused by reliance on private operators.
The development is particularly significant given the rising fuel prices and economic pressure affecting daily travel in the state and across Nigeria.
The governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to revamping public infrastructure and service delivery. He said the resumption of the transport company is one of several upcoming initiatives aimed at modernizing Edo State’s transportation sector and improving the quality of life for its citizens.
The Edo State Government is expected to release further details in the coming weeks regarding ticketing systems, route schedules, fare prices, and service coverage areas. Passengers have been advised to stay informed through official government communication channels ahead of the June 27 relaunch date.
