“I Am Surprised That ASUU Has Gone On Strike” – Education Minister, Adamu

The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu says the decision by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to embark on strike came to him as a surprise.

This is as he claimed the union went on strike while negotiations were still ongoing and the government was already attending to their matters.

The Minister stated this during a chat with State House correspondents on Wednesday after the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting in Abuja.

Adamu said the government had already set up a committee to review the demands and position of ASUU when suddenly the union announced a strike action.

“ASUU, unfortunately, has gone on strike and I am looking for them because all the issues are being addressed.

“The last thing that happened was that our committee looked at their demands, but there are renegotiations going on. They submitted a draft agreement which the ministry is looking at,” Adamu said.

The Minister also denied allegations that he doesn’t attend negotiation meetings with ASUU, stating that the only times he was absent was during his medical trip to Germany.

He added that the government wants a peaceful and quick resolution to the matter.

“ASUU will never say that. I always call the meetings myself. The meetings I didn’t attend were those that happened when I was in hospital in Germany.

“We want a peaceful resolution. The Federal Government is ready to meet them on all issues they have raised. If there are so many meetings and the gap is not closing, then I think it’s not the fault of the government.

“There is a solution to this. The negotiations are the solution. That is why I have said that I am surprised that ASUU has gone on strike,” Adamu said.

Tracknews.ng recalls ASUU on Monday, 14th February declared a one-month warning strike over claims that the federal government has refused to implement the agreement with its members.
