Operatives of the Lagos Zonal Directorate 2 of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested 93 individuals suspected of engaging in internet fraud during a sting operation in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The arrests took place on Sunday, August 10, 2025, at the Green Legacy Hotel, situated within the premises of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library. The operation followed credible intelligence indicating the suspects’ alleged involvement in various forms of cybercrime.
Eyewitnesses reported that heavily armed EFCC operatives stormed the hotel early in the morning, cordoning off the premises before making the arrests. The operation, which lasted several hours, was said to have been carefully coordinated to prevent any of the suspects from escaping.
During the raid, the anti-graft agency recovered 18 vehicles and multiple mobile devices believed to have been used for illicit online activities. Officials said the seized items would undergo forensic analysis as part of ongoing investigations.
The EFCC stated that the suspects are currently in custody and will be prosecuted once investigations are concluded. A spokesperson for the commission emphasised that the operation was part of its sustained efforts to clamp down on cybercrime across the country, warning that those involved in fraudulent online schemes would face the full weight of the law.
The Green Legacy Hotel, where the arrests took place, is a well-known hospitality facility located within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library complex, a prominent landmark in Abeokuta. The incident has since drawn public attention due to the venue’s association with the former Nigerian president, though there is no indication that the hotel’s management or the library itself was linked to the alleged crimes.
Local residents expressed surprise at the scale of the arrests, with some describing it as one of the largest anti-fraud operations in the city in recent years. The EFCC has in the past carried out similar raids in Ogun State, which authorities say has become a hotspot for internet-related offences due to the high concentration of cybercrime networks.
Security analysts note that the use of hotels as operational bases for internet fraud is a growing trend, as perpetrators often rent rooms for extended periods to carry out scams targeting individuals and businesses both within and outside Nigeria. The EFCC has urged hoteliers to be vigilant and report suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies.
As of Monday morning, the suspects remained in EFCC custody, and further details about their identities and specific charges are expected to emerge in the coming days. The commission reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying nationwide operations aimed at dismantling cybercrime syndicates and recovering proceeds of illegal activities.
