The EU stated that a peaceful political environment and progress by the Burundian Government, including human rights and the voluntary return of refugees into the country as reasons for lifting the sanction.

However, it noted that Authorities in the country should solve the challenges in the areas of human rights, good governance, reconciliation, and the rule of law.

Recall that it lifted the sanctions imposed in 2016 after late President Pierre Nkurunziza’s decision to contest a third time in office sparked violent protests across the nation.

Burundi’s President Évariste Ndayishimiye said the EU’s decision to lift the sanction was a welcome development and that the country is set to partner and cooperate with foreign nations to develop its economy.

It is pertinent to mention that the lifting of sanctions by the EU comes months after the United States took a similar decision last year.
