The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has shut down Runway 18R/36L at Murtala Muhammed Airport in Ikeja for rehabilitation work. The closure took effect at 3 a.m. on Monday to allow for the asphalt phase of repairs on the A2 Taxiway link.

FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mrs. Obiageli Orah, confirmed the closure in a statement, emphasizing that flight operations would not be disrupted. According to her, all flights will be redirected to the alternate Runway 18L/36R to ensure continued operations.

She reassured passengers and stakeholders that FAAN remains dedicated to maintaining the highest standards of safety, security, and convenience for all airport users. While the agency has not specified how long the repairs will take, the decision to shut down the main runway is aimed at ensuring long-term improvements to airport infrastructure.

Murtala Muhammed Airport is Nigeria’s busiest international gateway, handling thousands of passengers daily. The temporary closure of Runway 18R/36L is expected to streamline maintenance efforts and improve the overall efficiency of flight operations. Despite the inconvenience, FAAN has urged passengers and airlines to remain patient as the agency works toward completing the rehabilitation.

Airport officials have assured that the alternative runway is fully operational and capable of handling current air traffic. However, passengers may experience slight delays due to increased activity on the single operational runway. Airlines and airport authorities are coordinating efforts to minimize any disruptions.

This development is part of FAAN’s broader strategy to upgrade airport infrastructure across Nigeria. Over the years, the agency has undertaken several maintenance projects to enhance safety and efficiency at the nation’s airports. The latest rehabilitation efforts reflect FAAN’s ongoing commitment to improving aviation standards and ensuring compliance with international safety regulations.

Travelers and airline operators have been advised to stay updated on any further announcements from FAAN regarding the progress of the runway repairs. The agency has also pledged to keep stakeholders informed throughout the rehabilitation process.
