To avoid crop failure, the Nigeria Metrological Agency (NIMET) has urged farmers to follow the agency’s climatic change information.
It claimed that complying with climate information would increase farmers’ yield and profit by more than 35% while lowering their risk.
Speaking at a workshop for stakeholders in Ibadan, Oyo State’s capital, NIMET Assistant General Manager of Climate Service, Oyegade Adeleke, said the onset date is the best time for plantation because there is enough water in the soil. He added that the onset date is when the soil moisture is okay and adequate for farmers to plant their seeds.
According to Sulaimon Arigbabu of Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA), his non-governmental organization (NGO) trained farmers in the state on the importance of considering climate change in their farming activities in collaboration with Oxfam, NiMet, and Panafrican Africa Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA).
“Agriculture is changing, and it is founded on science and knowledge.” We can’t keep doing things the way our forefathers did because times have changed and there are more mouths to feed now than there were back then. We have less land to farm these days. Furthermore, our climate is changing on a daily basis, and farmers require knowledge to avoid problems,” he said.
The training participants praised the organizers for the information they received.
