Former Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has dismissed claims that he co-founded the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition alongside former Rivers State governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi. The denial came after Amaechi was reported to have made the statement during a conversation on X Spaces over the weekend.
In the widely circulated account, Amaechi allegedly recounted that the ADC coalition began with a small meeting at the home of Nasiru Danu, attended by himself, Fayemi, Salihu Mohammed — a former national vice-chairman (North-West) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) — and later expanded to include political figures such as Senator Aminu Tambuwal, a former governor of Sokoto State. The meeting was said to have been initiated to reconcile Amaechi and Fayemi before growing into a broader political alliance.
Responding in a statement issued by his Head of Media, Mallam Sajoh, Fayemi rejected the claim outright, stating there was no credible evidence that such remarks were ever made. According to him, no reputable media organisation had reported the statement, nor had any verifiable video of Amaechi making the claim surfaced.
The statement noted that in an era where fabricated or distorted comments are often attributed to public figures for political mischief, caution is necessary before engaging with allegations that may be based on misinformation. It added that the possibility exists that Amaechi was either misquoted or did not make the statement at all.
Fayemi stressed that he remains a committed member of the APC and has no plans to defect to any other political party. “We unequivocally state that these claims lack any basis. Dr. Fayemi remains a committed member and leader of the APC in Ekiti State. At various public forums in Ekiti and nationwide, he has consistently affirmed his dedication to the APC, working to address its challenges and advance its progressive ideals for Nigeria. Nothing has changed,” the statement read.
He further underscored his loyalty to the ruling party by highlighting his public endorsement of Governor Biodun Oyebanji for re-election in the forthcoming Ekiti State gubernatorial race. Fayemi has declared support for Oyebanji to secure the APC ticket, describing it as a clear indication of his commitment to the party’s success in the state.
The former Minister of Mines also pointed out that while he maintains friendships and professional relationships across political, religious, ethnic, and regional divides, such connections should not be mistaken for plans to abandon the APC.
Fayemi’s remarks appear aimed at quelling growing political speculation following Amaechi’s alleged statement, as attention turns to potential realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections. For now, he insists his focus remains on contributing to the APC’s stability and electoral strength both in Ekiti State and at the national level.
