Achievers varsity expels six students for cultism
TRACKING_____Six students of Achievers University, Owo, Ondo State were yesterday expelled from the institution after they were found guilty of cultism.
According to the institution, the decision to expel students was approved by the management of the institution following the recommendation of Student Disciplinary Committee.
Addressing journalists over the issue at Owo, the institution’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Samuel Tunji Ibiyemi noted that disciplinary action taken by the school against the student was in line with the rules and regulations of the institution which the students had flouted.
The names of the expelled students, who were all in 300-level were given as “Awolo David favour (Mass Communication), Owolebi James Fayogbemi (Political Science), Oyeniran Temitope Emmanuel (Nursing Science), Yahaya Muhammed Lawal (Medical Laboratory Science), Owolabi Nicholas Opeyemi (Computer Engineering) and Onagoruwa Oladipupo Oyinlola (Biochemistry).
Speaking on the expulsion, the Vice-Chancellor said “by this public announcement through the press, these students ceased to be students of Achievers University, Owo. Anybody, individual or corporate organisations dealing with them as Achievers students does so at his or her own risk.
“The management of the university has set up a fact-finding committee to conduct thorough investigation among the students to identify any other student involved in such illegal organisation.
“The University Council and Management hereby show by this effort the zero tolerance for cultism in Achievers University, Owo. The university is opened to any information that are relevant for the discipline and proper grooming of Achievers University students.”
Shortly after speaking with the journalists, the expelled students were handed over to the police for further investigation and onward prosecution.
On the issue of the deadly Lassa fever, Ibiyemi stated that the school had been collaborating with the Federal Medical Center (FMC), Owo, as part of the efforts to prevent the students from contracting the disease.
“We have a team in the FMC; they advise us and we also advise our students on the ways to live hygienic life and thereby keeping the disease away.” Ibiyemi said.
