FG okays allowance for senior staff, Labour may suspend strike

The organised labour is set to suspend its planned indefinite nationwide strike after emergency meeting with President Bola Tinubu’s government.

This follows an agreement for the suspension of its planned nationwide strike after a closed-door meeting at the Presidential Villa Abuja on Sunday night.

Addressing journalists after the four-hour meeting, the NLC President, Joe Ajaero said the N25,000 announced by President Bola Tinubu during his Independence Day anniversary broadcast is now applicable across board and not only low-grade worker.

The federal government also agreed to remove 7.5% Value Added Tax, VAT on diesel to ensure reduction in price of the product that is mostly used to power generating plants in factories and offices.

Leadership of organised labour is to meet with organs of workers unions to announce decision to suspend planned nationwide indefinite strike scheduled to begin from midnight of Tuesday, October 3.

Meanwhile, the federal government and organised labour are to continue with talks on Monday to further streamline issues surrounding fuel subsidy removal interventions.

Sunday’s meeting was chaired by the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila with the Minister of Labour and Employment, Simon Lalong; Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun and the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris. Others were the Minister of Budget and National Planning; Atiku Bagudu; Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejiocha and the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.
