Five major talking points from NPFL weekend fixtures

It was another thrilling weekend in the Nigeria Premier Football League.

Track news presents the five salient talking points from matchday 14 fixtures.

Enyimba picking form at right time

The eight-time champions recorded an impressive 2-1 win against Kwara United at the Akure Sports Complex on Sunday. Finidi George’s side showed grit and finesse in this remarkable victory.

After failing to record a win in four outings prior to last weekend’s 1-0 home victory against Plateau United, Enyimba proved they are ready for the fight as the season reaches its climax with their impressive performance in Akure.

It was the only away win on matchday 14.

Plateau United end Akwa United’s eight-game unbeaten streak

Akwa United fought hard but in the end their unbeaten streak was halted by Plateau United at the New Jos Stadium.

It was the Promise Keepers third defeat of the season and one which saw them drop to third position on the Group A table.

Lobi Stars bite the dust in Yenagoa

Perhaps the most shocking result of the weekend was Group A leaders, Lobi Stars going down to a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Bayelsa United in Yenagoa.

Having defeated holders Rivers United 3-2 in a rescheduled game in midweek, much was expected from Lobi Stars in this game but sadly, they fell like a pack of cards.

Bayelsa United totally dominated the game and deserved their victory.

Sunshine Stars falter again

Edith Agoye’s Sunshine Stars have seen their Super Six chances dwindle in recent weeks and their free fall continued with another disappointing defeat to Abia Warriors in Umuahia.

The Owena Waves are now winless in their last four games and should now be more concerned with their survival than a title charge.

Rangers bow under pressure again

It has been a tough campaign for the seven-time champions. The Flying Antelopes have flirted with relegation all season and dropped another vital two points against Niger Tornadoes at home on Sunday.

Abdul Maikaba’s side led 2-0 at half-time but squandered the advantage with the game ending in a 2-2 draw
