The Chief of Staff to the Rivers State Governor, Edison Erie, has raised concerns over how the recently resigned Head of Service, George Were, could afford to stay at the high-end Transcorp Hilton hotel in Abuja without financial assistance from political opponents.
Speaking in an interview with Channels TV, Erie suggested that Were’s decision to turn against the governor was driven by fear of losing his position. “The real issue is contentment. George Were is not a contented man. He simply panicked, thinking, ‘Now that I’ve left office, what will I do? Who will support me? How will I survive?’”
Edison questioned the financial feasibility of Were’s hotel stay, noting that his basic salary was under ₦500,000. “How did he afford lodging at Transcorp Hilton? These are individuals who lack integrity,” he stated.
Providing further insight into Were’s resignation, Erie emphasized that the governor did not provide him with any financial support after he stepped down. “According to his messages, he resigned voluntarily. He told everyone he could not serve in a government where Governor Siminalayi Subaru was not in charge.”
He concluded with a sharp critique of Were’s actions, stating that his lack of contentment led him to accept offers from political opponents. “Because he was complaining about financial struggles, they reached out to him. In the process, he betrayed his conscience, his family, and even his children,” he remarked.
