His Excellency, Senator Douye Diri, Governor of Bayelsa State today at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex in Yenagoa kicked off the 5th edition of the Governor’s Cup, tagged “Prosperity Cup.”

The kick-off of the tournament was done after the weekly Prosperity Walk.

Speaking at the kick-off, the Director General (DG) of the Prosperity Cup, Mr. Ono Akpe reiterated the support of Gov. Diri even before he became Governor.

“A few years ago when this idea was conceived, we went knocking on the doors of many Bayelsans, and even if he wasn’t Governor then, he supported us, he supported us again and again in his capacity as a member of the House of Reps and a member of the Senate. But today, we have grown this tournament from what we thought, was a mere play to become one of the most prestigious and largest tournaments in Africa and that’s a great feat.”

The Commissioner for Youths and Sports Development, Hon. Daniel Igali described the tournament as the biggest football tournament in Nigeria and Africa.

“This is another edition of the Prosperity Football Tournament which has been adjudged to be the biggest grassroots football tournament not only in Nigeria but in Africa.”

Dr. Peter Singabele, former Football Federation chairman of, the Bayelsa chapter also congratulated Governor Diri for yet another feat in this year’s edition.

214 teams are registered in this year’s edition.
