Concerned about the detrimental effects of social vices on teens, a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), Mum 2 Mum Global Foundation, has urged teenagers to avoid social vices that would negatively impact them.
Chinenye Jerry-Amah, the Foundation’s Founder, delivered the charge in Lagos during an empowerment event for youths titled “Social Vices, the Impact on Teenagers.”
A large number of students from various Lagos schools attended the empowerment summit.
“There is a need for youngsters to be guided and cognizant of things they do, watch, as well as the type of friends and guidance they interact with so that they will not be deceived,” Jerry-Amah said, lamenting the growing rise of social vices among teens.
“Social media may be both a blessing and a burden, but teens must prioritize their priorities, be intentional kids, and discover themselves so that no one can damage their mental health.”
Moyinoluwa Olutayo, an actress and filmmaker, stated of the impact of movies on teenagers, “No one can over-emphasize the power of the media, fundamentally what movies should be doing is truly entertaining and educating people’s minds.”
“The film business has done a lot of fantastic work in terms of developing the minds of kids via conflict resolution, but it’s terrible that we live in a world where people think what they want to think and learn what they want to learn.”
“There is no movie that seeks to encourage vices, nor is there any producer who would come out on purpose to contaminate people’s minds, but we still have some work to do.”
She stated that many people have been able to structure their lives positively as a result of what they have seen in the media.
Olutayo also praised the Lagos State government for ensuring the teens’ safety.
She advised teenagers to be happy with what they had and to stay focused.
Dr. Oluwatoyin Ojegimi, a spokesperson of the Child Protection Network (CPN), further stated that teenagers must understand that their bodies belong to God and should not be abused.
