Chief Chidi Obetta, the Labour Party’s candidate in Enugu state’s Igbo-Eze South/Nsukka Federal Constituency, has stated that he joined the party to join forces in the current revolutionary movement to reclaim the people’s government.

Obetta, who spoke shortly after being elected as the LP candidate on Sunday at the Crisspark Hotel in Nsukka, lamented the country’s ravaging insecurity, economic downturn, poverty, and disunity, claiming that the situation had arisen as a result of poor leadership. He stated that even though God had blessed him with relative wealth as a youth, he could not sit back and fold his hands and watch as a few Nigerians jeopardize the future of this country, particularly his peers and unborn children.

He thanked the LP delegates and party leaders for considering him worthy of flying the party’s ticket in the Federal Constituency, and promised that he would commit every resource within his power to ensure that he did not only win the Federal Constituency for the party, but that the electorate in the Federal Constituency voted massively for the party’s presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi; governorship candidate, Chief Chijioke Edeoga; and Session candidate, Chief Chijioke Edeoga

“I want to reassure you that you will not be sorry for voting for me as your candidate in our Federal Constituency in the upcoming 2023 general election.”

“I am ready to hit the ground running as soon as campaigns begin to ensure that not only did I win this election for our party, but that Mr. Peter Obi, our governorship candidate, Chief Chijioke Edeoga, Senate and state Assembly candidates received overwhelming votes in Igbo-Eze South/Nsukka Federal Constituency,” Obetta promised.

He did, however, charge the delegates and other party members to face the challenges of mobilizing illegible voters in the area to go and obtain their Permanent Voter’s Cards, or PVCs, and sensitizing them to vote for the Labour Party.

Previously, the secretary of the LP Electoral Committee, Ephraim Ugwu, described Obetta’s emergence as the party’s candidate for the Igbo-Eze South/Nsukka Federal Constituency as a sign of the party’s sure victory in the election, stating that apart from being a popular person in the area, he has the capacity to mobilize electorate for the party in the area.

Mr. Malachy Onyechi, the returning officer, declared Obetta the winner of the primary election after tallying all 36 votes cast by the 36 delegates from the two local governments that comprise the federal constituency, namely Igbo-Eze South and Nsukka.

Mr. Dustan Eke, an official of the Independent National Electoral Commission, observed the LP primary election. Obetta’s election came as a result of the voluntary withdrawal of the LP candidate in the Constituency, Rev. Chinagorom Godson Chukwuma.
