Ijaw National Congress Commends Senator Henry Seriake Dickson for Advocacy on Behalf of Ijaw People

The Ijaw National Congress (INC) has formally expressed its deep appreciation to Senator Henry Seriake Dickson for his continued and outspoken defense of the rights and interests of the Ijaw people. Senator Dickson, who represents Bayelsa West in the National Assembly, was commended for what the INC described as his principled and unwavering stance amid Nigeria’s ongoing political and economic challenges.

In a statement issued in early June 2025 and signed by INC President Professor Benjamin Okaba, the group hailed the senator’s courage and loyalty to the Ijaw cause. The INC emphasized that Senator Dickson had remained steadfast in his commitment to justice and the rule of law, despite what the group described as efforts to pressure him into abandoning his values.

According to the statement, Senator Dickson’s recent conduct in national political matters reflects his deep-rooted allegiance to the Ijaw community and its broader interests. Professor Okaba specifically cited Dickson’s position during the political crisis in Rivers State. During that period, the senator openly disagreed with the Senate leadership, including a public confrontation with the Senate President. He also walked out during a vote on emergency rule measures, which he opposed on the grounds that they contradicted democratic norms.

The INC viewed these actions as clear demonstrations of Dickson’s dedication to justice and democratic governance. Professor Okaba described the senator as “a true son of the Ijaw cause” who remains resolute in the face of political pressures.

The INC also acknowledged Senator Dickson’s efforts in drawing federal attention to the deteriorating economic situation in Ijawland. The group praised his recent appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in which the senator reportedly highlighted the continued marginalization of the region in terms of federal infrastructure, investment, and development.

The statement pointed to the senator’s vocal concern over what it characterized as the near-total absence of federal government presence in Ijaw communities. According to the INC, this neglect has significantly contributed to economic hardship and social stagnation in the Niger Delta region, which includes much of Ijawland.

Senator Dickson’s recent interventions were said to reflect the frustrations and expectations of the Ijaw people, who have long called for greater equity, development, and federal accountability in the oil-rich but underdeveloped region.

The INC called on other political figures from the Niger Delta and beyond to follow Dickson’s example by prioritizing the welfare of their constituents over personal or partisan interests. Professor Okaba described Dickson’s approach to politics as one rooted in principles, courage, and a sense of duty to his people.

In concluding the statement, the INC reaffirmed its pride in Senator Dickson’s efforts and urged continuous vigilance and advocacy among Ijaw leaders. The organization emphasized that such steadfast leadership is essential to ensuring that the concerns of the Ijaw nation remain on the national agenda.

The commendation comes at a time when tensions remain high in the Niger Delta over resource control, infrastructure neglect, and limited federal investment in the region. The INC’s message suggests a growing demand for stronger representation and accountability from those in public office, particularly in areas historically impacted by economic and environmental exploitation.

Professor Okaba signed the statement on behalf of the Ijaw National Congress, underscoring the collective nature of the endorsement from the Ijaw community.
