The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, published the list of Governorship Candidates across the country yesterday, in accordance with its schedule of activities for the 2023 general elections.

The names of many candidates were pasted despite the fact that the lists had not been pasted in some state headquarters of the commission and there was confusion in Delta over the People’s Democratic Party, PDP’s list on the INEC portal.

The names of APC Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and PDP Governor Abdulazeez (Jandor) were published in Lagos.

Mr Peter Mbah of the PDP and other candidates were published in Enugu at the same time that High Chief Ikechi Emenike’s name was pasted as the APC Governorship Candidate in Abia State.

Sadiq Wali, the son of former Foreign Minister Aminu Wali, was named as the PDP governorship candidate in Kano by INEC.

The PDP had previously announced Muhammad Sani Abacha, the son of former Military Head of State General Sani Abacha, as its gubernatorial candidate.

According to reports, the opposition party has been divided into two factions, each led by Mr Wali and Shehu Sagagi as party chairmen.

The two factions held parallel primaries, which produced Mr Wali and Muhammad Abacha as PDP governorship candidates.

Mr Sagagi’s faction was recognized by a Federal High Court in Abuja, which ruled that it would run the party’s affairs in the state until December 2024.

However, in an unexpected turn of events, the INEC Kano office listed Mr Wali’s name alongside that of his running mate, Yusuf Dambatta, in the list of governorship candidates for the 2023 election. Other governorship candidates on the list include Nasiru Gawuna, the Deputy Governor of Kano State, who has Murtala Sule Garo, the Commissioner for Local Government, as his running mate from the All Progressives Party.

Salihu Tanko-Yakasai of the People’s Redemption Party, PRP, and Sheikh Ibrahim Khalil of the ADC were also mentioned.
