Albert Bassey Akpan, the lawmaker representing Akwa Ibom North-East senatorial district in Akwa Ibom State, has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
According to Track News, Akpan announced his intention to run for governor of Akwa Ibom State in the 2023 general election in March 2022.
In a letter to his ward chairman in Ibiono Ibom Eastern Ward 1 of Ibiono Ibom local government area of the State, the 9th National Assembly lawmaker stated that he resolved to withdraw from the PDP after consulting God, friends and families, and political colleagues.
He reiterated his intention to run for governor of Akwa-Ibom State on the platform of an unnamed political party.
According to Track News, the PDP in Akwa Ibom elected Pastor Umo Eno as its standard flag-bearer for the gubernatorial elections during its state primary election.
The development is said to have unsettled Akpan, hence his desire to advance his career in another camp.
“I make bold this communication with the greatest sense of responsibility, purpose, and love for my people,” the senator writes in his resignation letter.
“I have been a loyal and committed member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for over 20 years and have served our people, state, and nation diligently and without blemish through the platform of the party, and I have by the grace of God contributed positively and impactfully to the growth and development of our dear country, state, and our people in general.”
“I believe that as a lawmaker, particularly a distinguished one, I must always advocate and pursue virtues and values that promote and sustain effective adherence to the rule of law.”
“As you are aware, my desire to serve our dear state as Executive Governor is not personal or selfish, but rather the collective ambition of our people to achieve a better and prosperous Akwa Ibom State based on the principles of justice and equity.”
“To quote Jean Anouilh, “the only immorality is not doing what one has to do when one has to do it.”
“Therefore, after extensive consultation with my God, family, friends, supporters, and well-meaning believers in a just and equitable Akwa Ibom State all over the world, it is clear that these collective yearnings and aspirations cannot be realized under the Peoples Democratic Party platform” (PDP).
“As a result, guided by the sentiments, concerns, and worries expressed by our people, we must take immediate steps to realize their aspirations.” As a result, I am compelled to resign my membership in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) immediately.”
