According to TrackNews university lecturers have been on strike since February 14, 2022, due to unresolved issues with the federal government.
Among their demands are improved lecturer welfare, a revitalization fund for public universities, the implementation of the 2009 agreement, and the replacement of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) with the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS).
ASUU Explains Why It Rejected FG’s New Offer
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has explained why it rejected the Federal Government’s new offer.
ASUU said in a statement signed by its President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, on Thursday that it rejected the offer because it was miserable and untenable.
Osodeke went on to say that the Federal Government’s main reason for the union’s refusal to accept the offer is a lack of revenue.
The ASUU President accused the government of prolonging the strike because of its provocative indifference.
Strike: ASUU Responds to Adamu’s Call for Students to Sue
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has responded to Education Minister Adamu Adamu’s call for Nigerian students to sue the union.
TrackNews previously reported that the Minister of Education had urged students to take ASUU leadership to court to seek damages for the strike period.
He stated this on Thursday at the Presidential Communications Team’s Ministerial Briefing at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Adamu claimed that the union owed students compensation for the six-month closure of public institutions as well as the time lost during the strike.
The minister went on to say that the Muhammadu Buhari administration is under no obligation to compensate millions of students who have been grounded for six months for lost time.
However, Adamu stated that the government will not pay lecturers’ salaries for the six months that public institutions are closed.
Students Should File a Lawsuit Against ASUU Due to Prolonged Strike – FG. The Federal Government of Nigeria has advised students in Nigeria to sue the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) over the ongoing strike.
