Ibekimi Oriamaja Reports

The Kano State Executive Council (SEC) has approved a 50% increase in state scholarship allowances for students indigenous to the state studying in Nigerian institutions.

SEC approved the release of over N865.4 million to the state scholarship board as outstanding allowances and logistics for student payment across the 44 local government areas of the state’s five emirates.

The State Commissioner for Information, Malam Muhammad Garba, who briefed reporters on the outcome of the weekly SEC meeting held at the Council Chamber, Government House, Kano, said the scholarships would benefit a total of 40,494 indigenous students.

He stated that the total outstanding scholarship for the 40,494 internal students from Karaye, Bichi, Rano, Kaya, and Kano in the state’s 44 local government areas is N836.2 million, with logistics exceeding N29.2 million.

According to Malam Garba, Karaye Emirate has eight local government areas and 3,094 students, with N61.5 million in outstanding allowances and more than N4 million in logistics.

“Bichi Emirate, which has nine local government areas and 3,494 students, will receive more than N71.2 million in outstanding allowances and slightly more than N4 million in logistics.”

The commissioner also stated that the allowances and logistics for the 4,015 students from Rano Emirate, which has ten local government areas, will be N78.4 million and N4 million, respectively, while Gaya Emirate, which has nine local government areas and 4,260 students, will receive more than N86.2 million in outstanding allowances and N4 million in logistics.

He stated that the Kano Emirate, which has eight local government areas, has outstanding scholarship allowances for 26,086 students and will receive approximately N539 million, as well as logistics in relation to the payment totaling N13.1 million.

In addition, the state government has declared Monday, August 1, 2022, as a work-free day to commemorate the start of the 1445 Islamic (Hijrah) New Year.

Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje made the announcement yesterday, according to a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Malam Muhammad Garba.

According to the statement, the first lunar month of the New Islamic Year, Muharram, begins tomorrow.

The governor congratulated all Kano State Muslims on the spiritual significance of the occasion, which he described as “calling for self-assessment.”

He urged Muslims to take advantage of the holiday to seek Allah’s forgiveness and pray for His intervention to save the country from lingering security challenges and to improve the general well-being and progress of the state and the country.

Ganduje assured residents that his administration is committed to delivering on its promise to improve their living standards through the implementation of people-oriented programs and projects.

The statement also urged those who have yet to obtain voter registration cards to do so in order to vote in next year’s general election.
