Kogi: Police give update on abduction of passengers along Anyigba-Itobe road

Kogi State Police Command has clarified a report making the rounds that over 15 passengers have been kidnapped on Anyigba-Itobe highway on Wednesday.

In a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, William Ovye Aya on Thursday, said the report was false, explaining that Kogi State Police Command responded to a distress call and chased kidnappers before rescuing 12 of the passengers, while the kidnappers were being trailed inorder to rescue the remaining abducted four passengers.

The statement said: “The attention of the Kogi State Police Command has been drawn to the news making the rounds that over 15 Passengers are missing as kidnappers stormed Anyigba-Itobe Highway of Kogi State.

“Kogi Police Command urges clarification of reports before going to the press to avoid misleading the public.

“On Wednesday 6/4/2022, the Command received a report that one Toyota bus with Registration Number Benue 192 XA driven by one Benard Ejeh conveying 16 passengers from Abuja heading to Benue State via Ankpq ran into kidnappers at Ojuwo-Ajegbo village in Ofu Local Government Area along Anyigba road.”

The statement explained that operatives of the Quick Response Unit stationed at Itobe gave kidnappers a hot chase into the bush before rescuing 12 victims.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Edward Egbuka, who was on a visiting tour at Kogi East Senatorial Zone, got the information while he was on his way to Ejule, immediately moved to the scene met with the rescued passengers and ordered that they should be moved to Itobe Division for debriefing.”
