A grieving mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Okon, has accused policemen in Cross River State of killing her son, Moses Okon, for attempting to deliver a divine message to Governor Bassey Otu. The allegations were detailed in an exclusive interview with newsmen, where Mrs. Okon recounted the events leading to her son’s tragic death.
According to Mrs. Okon, Moses, a 32-year-old devout Christian, claimed he had received a vision from God instructing him to deliver a message to the governor. On the day of the incident, Moses visited the Government House in Calabar to request an audience with Governor Otu. However, he was confronted by approximately five policemen at the entrance, who denied him entry, asking if he had an appointment. Moses explained that his visit was divinely inspired and that he was compelled to share God’s words with the governor. Despite his plea, he was turned away.
Undeterred, Moses returned to the Government House a second time, reiterating his request to meet the governor. Again, his request was denied. Mrs. Okon alleged that during this second visit, the situation escalated, and the policemen used excessive force against her son. She claimed that Moses was brutally assaulted by the officers, leading to injuries that resulted in his death shortly after.
“They killed my son for trying to obey God’s command,” Mrs. Okon said, tearfully. “He was not a troublemaker. He only wanted to deliver the message God gave him. Why would they kill him for that?”
The Cross River State Police Command has not issued an official statement regarding the incident. However, a source within the Government House, speaking anonymously, claimed that Moses’ persistent attempts to access the premises without an appointment raised security concerns, prompting the police response. The source denied allegations of lethal force, stating that the officers acted within protocol to secure the facility.
Mrs. Okon has called for a thorough investigation into her son’s death, demanding justice and accountability for the officers involved. “My son’s life was taken for no reason. I want those responsible to face the law,” she said. She also urged the state government to review security protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The incident has sparked outrage among local residents and religious groups, who are calling for clarity on the circumstances surrounding Moses’ death. Community leaders have urged the state government and police to address the allegations promptly to restore public trust.
Efforts to reach the Cross River State Government for comment were unsuccessful at the time of this report. The case has heightened tensions in Calabar, with growing calls for transparency and justice for Moses Okon.
