My hit song was inspired by my late father – Teni

Teniola Apata is the biggest Nigerian artist to emerge from 2018 and the fan love and awards she won in that year attest to this. Her songs ‘Wait’, ‘Askamaya’ and ‘Uyo Meyo‘ are fan favorites and her popularity is daily on the rise.

Teniola and her awardwinning sister, Niniola are daughters of late General Simeon Apata who was killed by gunmen on January 8, 1995. In his lifetime, General Apata was famous for ridding the Isolo area of armed robbers but even 24 years after his death, his legacy lives on through his daughters.

In an interview with Punch Newspaper, Teni says her hit song Wait was inspired by her father’s death. She said,“Wait tells the love story between my mum and dad. I got the inspiration when my dad passed and my mum was crying, wishing he could have stayed back.”

For Uyo Meyo, Teni admitted that it took her seven years to graduate and her younger sisters completed their studies before her. She said, “I recorded Uyo Meyo for my graduation ceremony because it took me seven years to graduate. My sisters graduated before me; so, it was a big deal for me on the day I graduated. I did the song for myself and everyone who hopes to achieve something.”
