The Grade A Customary Court in Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, has officially dissolved the marriage between Rakiah and Jamiu due to neglect, battery, and domestic violence on Jamiu’s part.

Rakiah requested a restraining order against Jamiu to prevent him from threatening and interfering with her private life. She also sought custody of their children and asked that Jamiu be held responsible for their welfare.

Jamiu denied all allegations against him but agreed to the divorce. In her testimony, Rakiah explained, “My husband and I entered into this marriage without completing the necessary marital rites. We did not hold any marriage ceremony, nor did he pay my bride price.

“My husband changed significantly from the man I knew while we were dating. He failed to give me and our children the attention we needed. He hardly met our basic needs and showed no interest in our well-being. Our disagreements were frequent due to his lackadaisical attitude. Our neighbors often had to mediate our disputes.

“He is violent and hits me with any dangerous object he can find during our fights. I eventually packed my belongings and moved out when it became clear that he might seriously harm me. I implore the court to end our relationship. Additionally, I seek custody of our children because my husband does not care for their well-being. I also request that the court restrain him from threatening and interfering with my private life.”

In response, Jamiu stated, “My lord, I agree that we should go our separate ways. She is a harlot and lacks shame. I caught her with another man a few years ago and informed her family and our children. Instead of feeling remorseful, she deepened her involvement with him until she became pregnant. I was not home when she became pregnant, so the child cannot be mine. She gave birth a few months after moving out of my house.”

After hearing both parties, the court president, S.M. Akintayo, dissolved their union.
