2023 Election: ’Unknown Gunmen won’t stop us’ – INEC Chairman vows
Amid the menace of the ‘Unknown Gunmen’, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, on Friday spoke on the security concerns in parts of Imo State, leading to the withdrawal of some key election staff in the affected areas.
TrackNews reports that according to the INEC chief, elections will hold in troubled areas in the southeast region because the commission has received security assurance.
“The commission is aware of the situation in Imo State in the southeastern part of the country where it was reported that some of the critical polling unit officials drawn from the national youth service corps have withdrawn their participation from some local government areas as a result of perennial insecurity.
“We have been assured that with enough security personnel in the area, it is possible for elections to hold in that area,” Yakubu said during INEC’s briefing on Saturday’s election.
Furthermore, Prof. Yakubu stated that voter enthusiasm is high and so is INEC’s determination to conduct credible elections. He, therefore, urged all registered voters to come out and exercise their franchise on Saturday.
