281 Inmates Missing After Flooding at Maiduguri Correctional Centre
The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCOS) has reported that 281 inmates are currently missing from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Maiduguri, Borno State, following severe flooding that necessitated their evacuation.
In a statement by NCOS spokesman Umar Abubakar, it was revealed that seven inmates have since returned to the facility. The flooding caused extensive damage to both the correctional center and staff quarters, prompting the evacuation with assistance from other security agencies.
During the evacuation process, it was discovered that a significant number of inmates were unaccounted for. Abubakar assured the public that the NCOS maintains detailed records of the missing inmates, including their biometrics, and that efforts are underway to track and recapture them in collaboration with other security agencies.
“The service is working in synergy with other security agencies as both covert and overt deployments have been activated to look out for them,” Abubakar stated, emphasizing that public safety remains unaffected by the incident.
