81 Division Troops Intercept 792 Parcels of Indian Hemp
By Adeleye Kunle
At a checkpoint on the Ilaro-Benin Republic border, troops from the 81 Division foiled an attempt to smuggle 792 parcels of illicit drugs suspected to be Cannabis Sativa (Marijuana) into Ogun State.
According to Major Olaniyi Osoba, Acting Deputy Director, 81 Division Army Public Relations, this was possible as a result of an intelligence-driven operation.
The parcels of Indian helm were said to be hidden in a truck traveling from Ghana’s Volta Region.
The drugs were estimated to be worth N10 million and were to be delivered to a drug syndicate based in Lagos that is currently on the run.
According to Osoba, a search of the truck transporting the consignment revealed that it was specifically designed to transport illicit drugs, as there was a special compartment welded to the truck’s base for concealment purposes but could be discovered on closer inspection.
“After resisting the bribe offered by the suspected drug syndicates, it took the vigilance of the troops at the checkpoint to detect the concealed drugs,” he added.
The suspected illegal drugs and suspects were turned over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Lagos Command for further investigation.
